Leather Archives & Museum
Fundraising
Toolkit
Are
you a titleholder, individual or organization thinking about or planning to hold
a fundraiser for the LA&M? Please let us help you help us!
Ideas
for successful fundraisers:
 |
Collecting things locally for an auction and also checking in with the LA&M
where there are always many items donated *expressly for the purpose of
being sold or auctioned to raise funds.* Nothing is ever retired from the
collection and sold without the donor's explicit permission, but people
often give us things meant to raise funds which we are able to supply when
there are sales or auctions to be held anywhere. |
 |
For
some groups, it may be appropriate to have a drive to collect materials for
the LA&M--anything and everything, or with a theme such as colors of defunct
clubs in the area or photos of important local leather men and women, for
example--and to also, intentionally collect materials that would not be
appropriate in the LA&M collection, according to the collection policy. With
a liaison person in contact with the Executive Director, mistakes in sorting
the two categories can be avoided, and an event can be arranged at which the
items to be donated to the LA&M are given a local showing while the other
items are offered for sale whether in an auction (silent or live) or in a
flea market style setting. |
 |
In
some areas, especially where such a thing would be unheard-of or unusual, a
community exchange can be arranged. The usual format for a community
exchange is for people to basically all have a leather/SM garage sale in one
place at one time, paying a fee for being included which can either be a set
figure or a small percentage of the amount raised in sales. Various versions
of this plan can be very effective fund-raisers... and good
community-building opportunities as well. |
 |
Of
course there's always the "Pay money to force someone into an embarrassing
or compromising position" fund raiser. Such as Shave Da Bear in which Joseph
Bean, Executive Director of the LA&M, consented to be shaved from head to
toe if the sum of $10,000 was raised.
(Webmaster's note: $10,017 was raised with the help of many individuals and
clubs and Joseph was indeed shaved head to toe.) Then there's
the $5,051 raised by the Menamore Levi/Leather Club with the help of many
others to have Vi Johnson's pony tail cut off. As part of the De-tailing Vi
fund raiser $500 was raised to make 1999 Ms. Leather Pride, Paula Smith
stand on a chair and cluck like a chicken. Embarrassment pays! |
