Biographical Note

Michele A. Buchanan was born in 1962 and received her Ph.D. from the New School for Social Research in 2003. Prior to attending the New School, she taught high school English and worked in a bookstore. Her thesis was titled Leather is Thicker than Blood: Identity Formation among Organized SM Practitioners in New York City.

Michele Buchanan, also known as Antoinette, was a self-identified leatherwoman active in the New York leather scene for many years. She was one of the original editors and co-founders of the magazine Black Leather in Color (BLIC), and an associate editor for the New York Leather and S/M newsletter.

Michele Buchanan and Leonard Dworkin met in 1991 and were married on December 14, 1996. They were known for their community activism and social events until Dworkin’s death in 1998.

According to a 2010 article, Buchanan was in her lifetime a blogger, an adjunct professor of anthropology, an executive recruiter, and a marketing specialist. She died in Newark, New Jersey in December 2014.
