Detailed Description of the Collection

The Jim Kane Collection consists of three archival document boxes and six storage containers. One archival document box contains correspondence to and from Jim and Ike, newspaper clippings related to sm, leather and sexuality, miscellanous publications and flyers from leather organizations, a set of Christmas cards from Frank and Don (friends of Jim and Ike from Chicago). A second archival box contains drafts of fictional erotic stories, many of which were bound and copied to be distributed through networks of friends. A third archival box contains materials from Sam Steward. Sam wrote under the pen name Phil Andros and practiced the art of tattoo under the name Phil Sparrow. Sam's box includes a sketch book, newspaper clippings authored by and about Sam Steward, and a series of instructional manuals entitled "Zeis school of Tattooing : Secrets of the art of Tattooing".

The Jim Kane Collection also consists of 6 storage containers. These are filled with artifacts and photographs from Jim. The photography includes photos of Jim and Ike, 1 photo of Sam Steward, and many photographs taken by other photographers. The other photographs include professional physique images as well as amateur photographs taken by other sm activists and mailed or given to Jim. The collection also holds a limited number of original artworks for which artists have not been identified. The artifacts are personal effects from Jim's life. They include leather clothing (jackets, boots, shirts, chaps, pants, belts and hats) both brown and black, s/m and bondage equipment, penis pumping equipment, dildos and gas masks. Many pieces of equipment from Jim's collection are homemade, although a few pieces are assumed to be mass manufactured. A few artifacts from Jim's involvement with the Rocky Mountaineer MC are also included in the collection.
