Biographical Note

Womanlink (1987-1997) was a mail network created by Carol Truscott, founding editor of the Sandmutopia Guardian, to connect women from across the country and abroad through a quartlerly newsletter and roster. It was modeled on a leather networking group for men called Interchain. From a 1992 press release, Truscott writes, “Womanlink gives women a chance to get to know one another safely, at a leisurely pace, by mail and by phone, to explore interests, to decide to meet for lunch, for play or not at all. It is also useful to SM-identified women for whom making contact with others is difficult because of isolation from an SM or leather community.” Womanlink averaged between 20 and 40 members per year. In 1994 and 1996, Truscott compiled a Resource Guide for women in S/M with recommendations on material and businesses of interest to women in SM and up-to-date information on active and defunct women’s leather organizations across the United States.
