De Sade and the Musketeers Leon Carvalho, better known as the artist Cavelo lived in Los Angeles and, although getting older, may well still live there. His art appeared in many Desmodus, Townsend and Zeus publications as well as other gay media and he shocked them all when he allowed a few pieces to be offered for sale at Gavin Dillard’s infamous erotic art reception and sale in 1990, in Los Angeles. Before that, Desmodus had heard of a couple of gifts, but never any Cavelo art being sold.

He worked almost exclusively in pencil and had close relationships with the users/publishers of his art. He was already well known and much appreciated before his art began appearing in Drummer. The series he did for Drummer under Joseph Bean’s direction always amazed him. Whether the idea for a specific historic item (his specialty) was his or Joseph’s, once he agreed to do a drawing, bang! It was done. Joseph noticed that many of Cavelo’s pictures were based directly on photos Desmodus or Larry Townsend had published, but that didn’t and doesn’t reduce his impressive talent.

De Sade and the Musketeers Once Cavelo's art was offered for sale, everybody wanted it. The result was not so much that he sold a lot right away, but that he gave quite a few pieces away… His images are all of just a couple of sizes, always on fine art paper and not as large as you’d expect for so much detail.
